Overview & Pattern

The UPSC CSE has three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims / Screening)
  2. Main Examination (Mains / Written)
  3. Personality Test / Interview

Marks from Prelims are not counted for final ranking; Prelims is just a screening test.

Only candidates who qualify Prelims can appear for the Mains & Interview.

Final merit is based on Mains (7 papers counted for ranking) + Interview.
